What happens if a taekwondo athlete steps out of the area or falls over?
I · Intermediate · Penalties · 2 of 7Both are prohibited acts and each costs a gam-jeom, which is a point to the opponent. Stepping out counts as soon as any part of a foot crosses the boundary line. There is no penalty when the opponent's foul caused it, when both fall after a collision, or when the athlete falls after scoring with a turning kick.
How it works
- The area: a square of 8 m by 8 m or an octagon about 8 m across.
- The alert area: a band 60 cm wide inside the edge, in a different colour, to warn athletes that the line is near.
- Crossing: a gam-jeom "if any part of a contestant's foot crosses the Boundary Line".
- Pushed out by a foul: no gam-jeom for the athlete who crossed.
- Falling down: a gam-jeom.
- Brought down by a foul: no gam-jeom for the athlete who fell, and a penalty for the opponent.
- Both fall: no penalty if both go down "as a result of incidental collision".
- Falling after a turning kick: no penalty if that kick scored.
- Late in a round: both fouls count as passive behaviour in the last ten seconds and give 2 points.
- Review: the coach may ask for a video replay of a fall or a crossing by the opponent.
The glossary has gam-jeom, the prohibited acts entry, the turning kick, the instant video replay, the referee and the contest.
Tricky cases
An athlete's heel is on the line but not over it. Is that a gam-jeom?
The rule speaks of the foot crossing the boundary line. A foot on the line has not crossed it.
An athlete lands a spinning kick to the head for 6 points and slips over. Is there a penalty?
No. An athlete who received a point with a turning kick and falls is not penalised.
An athlete throws a turning kick that misses, then falls. Is there a penalty?
Yes. The exception covers a turning kick that scored.
Blue pushes red in the chest and keeps pushing until red is over the line. Who is penalised?
Blue, for pushing the opponent out of the boundary line. Red is not penalised for crossing.
Why the rule exists
Without a price for leaving the area, the easiest defence would be to back out of it. Falling is treated the same way because going to the floor stops the action and ends the opponent's attack. The exception for a turning kick that scores protects the spectacular techniques the sport wants.
