How a match works, in a minute
How a taekwondo contest works
- Two athletes in electronic protectors score with punches and kicks. Sensors in the trunk and head protectors and the socks decide whether a kick landed with enough force.
- A punch to the trunk scores 1, a kick to the trunk 2 and a kick to the head 3. A turning kick scores more: 4 to the trunk, 6 to the head.
- Every foul, a gam-jeom, gives the opponent a point. Ten of them lose the contest.
- Under the standard system the points of all three rounds are added and the higher total wins; a tie goes to a golden round, where the first to two points wins. In the best-of-three system each round is won separately.
How long
Three rounds of two minutes, with a minute's rest between them.
