What are the age groups in ski mountaineering?

A · Advanced · Races and categories · 1 of 4
Checked 14 October 2026

Categories go by the age reached on 31 December of the season's second year: U18 is 17 and 18, U20 is 19 and 20 and Senior 19 and over, with U23 ranked inside the seniors. Youth tracks are shorter. Teams must be one nation, and each nation has quotas at World Championships.

How it works

  • U18: 17 and 18.
  • U20: 19 and 20.
  • Senior: 19 and over; U23 is 19 to 23.
  • Masters: from 35, in five-year bands.
  • World Cup: U18 athletes cannot race or be ranked.
  • Nationality: one nation per season, proved by passport.
  • Team members: same nation and national member.
  • World Championships quota: four senior men and four senior women in individual, sprint and vertical.

The glossary has the age categories (ski mountaineering), the team race, the relay race, the mixed relay, the International Ski Mountaineering Federation and the Team Captains' Meeting.

Tricky cases

Is there a separate U23 race?

No. U23 athletes race with the seniors and are also ranked as U23.

An athlete has two passports. Can they switch mid-season?

No. The choice holds for the whole season.

Can a licensed athlete pair with an unlicensed one?

Yes, but the licensed athlete gets no place points.

Does a world title earn anything for the nation?

Yes. An extra quota place in that discipline at the next championship.

Why the rule exists

Shorter youth tracks protect young athletes. Single-nation teams keep national results meaningful.
