What may a pistol athlete wear and bring to the line?

Officials' detail · Penalties, safety and equipment · 3 of 4
Checked 14 October 2026

Pistol athletes have no special shooting suit. Shoes must be low-sided, leaving the ankle bone uncovered, with a sole that bends at the front. Nothing may be worn or taped on that holds the body, arm or legs still. The wrist of the shooting arm must be bare.

How it works

  • Shoes: "Only low-sided shoes that do not cover the ankle bone" are permitted. The sole must be flexible in the whole front part of the foot.
  • The sole test: the sole must bend at least 22.5 degrees under a set force in the testing device.
  • Walking: athletes must walk normally, heel to toe, on the field of play. The first offence brings a warning and later ones two points or disqualification.
  • No supports: any device, clothing or taping that immobilises or unduly reduces movement of the legs, body or arms is prohibited.
  • The wrist: bracelets, wristwatches and wristbands may not be worn on the hand or arm that holds the pistol.
  • Blinders: one front blinder at most 30 mm wide may cover the eye that is not aiming. Side blinders are for shotgun athletes only.
  • Hearing protection: required at the 25 m and 50 m firing lines.
  • Telescopes: a spotting telescope not attached to the pistol may be used in 25 m and 50 m events only.
  • Stands: a stand or box may be put on the bench to rest the pistol between shots, if bench and stand together are no higher than 1.00 m.
  • Boxes in finals: transport boxes and bags may not stay on the field of play, and a box may not be used as a stand.
  • Bib number: worn on the back above the waist in training and competition. An athlete who has a bib number and does not wear it may not compete.
  • Dress: clothing must follow the ISSF Dress Code.

Tricky cases

Are high-top shoes or boots allowed?

No. Shoes must leave the ankle bone uncovered.

Can a pistol athlete wear side blinders?

No. Side blinders are permitted for shotgun athletes only. A front blinder over the eye that is not aiming is allowed.

Can a spotting telescope be used in 10 m air pistol?

No. Telescopes are permitted in 25 m and 50 m events only.

Can the athlete tape a wrist or elbow for support?

No. Taping that immobilises or unduly reduces movement of the arms is prohibited.

Why the rule exists

Pistol shooting is meant to be done by an unsupported body, so the clothing rules are a list of things that could act as a splint: a high boot at the ankle, tape at a joint, a band at the wrist. Everything else is left to the athlete.
