Racing and scoring

  1. What happens if a boat touches a mark?A boat that is racing must not touch a mark of the leg it is sailing.
  2. What do DNF, OCS, BFD and the other letters mean in sailing results? The letters in a results table say why a boat has no normal finishing place.

The start and running a race

  1. What happens if a boat is over the line at the start?A boat with any part of its hull over the line at its starting signal has not started and must come back.
  2. What do the I, Z, U and black flags mean at a start? These flags replace the plain P flag at four minutes and punish boats that are over the line in the last minute.

When boats meet

  2. Does a boat lose its rights while it is tacking?Yes, for a few seconds.
  3. Is a right-of-way boat allowed to hit a boat that gets in its way?No.
  4. Who gets to go inside at a mark? The boat that is overlapped on the inside when the first of them reaches the zone, three hull lengths from the mark, is entitled to mark-room from the boat outside.

Penalties and protests

  1. Why do sailing boats spin in circles after an incident? They are penalising themselves.
  2. How does one boat protest another in sailing?A protest is a claim by a boat or a committee that a boat has broken a rule.
