How a match works, in a minute
How a rugby sevens match works
- Seven players a side on a full-size rugby pitch, playing rugby union's laws with a few changes.
- Players carry, pass and kick the ball, but may never throw or knock it forward with the hand. A ball-carrier is stopped by a tackle, and must then release the ball.
- A try, grounding the ball in the opponents' in-goal, scores five points. The conversion after it, a drop kick, scores two. A penalty goal or a dropped goal scores three.
- After a score, the team that scored kicks off. The team with more points wins.
How long
Two halves of seven minutes, with a break of at most two minutes. A yellow card sends a player off for two minutes.
