How do sprint races work in roller speed skating?

The 100 m is raced in lanes on a straight, in heats of two to four, with only best times going through; touching a lane line disqualifies. The 500 m plus distance and one lap are run in heats from a 16-skater quarter-final, the first two going on. The 1,000 m has at most three rounds and a final of eight.

How it works

  • 100 m: lanes 2.60 m wide on a straight of at least 130 m.
  • 100 m rounds: best times go through; Final A for gold and silver, Final B for bronze.
  • 500 m plus distance: 2.5 laps of a track plus half a straight.
  • One lap: one road lap, start and finish on the same line.
  • 500 m and one lap rounds: best 16 times, then the first two of each heat.
  • 1,000 m: best times from the first round; heat winners and best times to an eight-skater final.
  • No loser's final in other events.
  • Start choice: skaters pick a free box in start-line order.

The glossary has the 100 m sprint, the 500 m plus distance sprint, the one lap sprint, the 1,000 m sprint, the Final A and Final B and the start box.

Tricky cases

A 100 m skater's wheel touches the lane line. Out?

Yes. It is a technical fault; if it happens in a fall, the skater is listed as did not finish.

Is there a Final B in the 500 m plus distance?

Not from 2026; it was removed.

Two skaters tie for 16th in the 500 m qualifying. What happens?

The quarter-finals are raced with 17.

Are warnings given in sprints?

No. There are no sports-fault warnings in sprint races.

Why the rule exists

Qualifying by time lets every heat count equally. Lanes in the 100 m remove contact from the shortest race.
