How do you lose at 8-ball?

I · Intermediate · 8-ball · 5 of 8
Checked 14 October 2026

A player loses the rack if they pocket the 8-ball on a foul, before clearing their group or in a pocket they did not call, or drive it off the table. These do not apply to the break. Any other foul gives the opponent ball in hand anywhere. 8-ball has no three-foul rule.

How it works

  • Loss of the rack: pocketing the 8-ball on a foul, before the group is cleared or in an uncalled pocket, or driving it off the table.
  • Not on the break: the break has its own rules for the 8-ball.
  • Standard fouls: play passes and the opponent has ball in hand anywhere.
  • The 8-ball fouls: scratch, wrong ball first, no rail, no foot on the floor, ball off the table, touched ball, double hit, push shot, balls moving, bad placement, bad play from above the head string, playing out of turn, slow play, rack template.
  • Wrong ball first: the first ball hit must be from the player's group, except on an open table.
  • No three-foul rule: 8-ball does not use it.
  • Conduct: the referee chooses a fitting penalty.
  • Stalemate: the original breaker breaks again.

The glossary has the losing the rack, the standard fouls, the eight-ball, the scratch, the ball in hand and the stalemate.

Tricky cases

The player pots the 8-ball cleanly, then the cue ball drops in. Win or loss?

Loss. Pocketing the 8-ball and fouling on the same shot loses the rack.

The player calls the corner but the 8-ball goes in the side. What happens?

They lose the rack. The 8-ball went into an uncalled pocket.

With one stripe left, a player pots the 8-ball by accident. What then?

They lose the rack, because the 8-ball went in before their group was cleared.

A player hits an opponent's ball first. Do they lose?

No. It is a standard foul, and the opponent gets ball in hand.

Why the rule exists

Losing on a foul with the 8-ball makes the last shot a real test: the player must control the cue ball as well as pot the black.
