A · Advanced · Starts and strokes · 3 of 4
Checked 14 October 2026

The classification panel gives some swimmers codes of exception, recorded on the master list. Letters cover the start and support: H for a light, Y for a starting device, A for assistance, T for a tapper, B for blackened goggles. Numbers cover touches and kicks, such as a one-hand touch in breaststroke or a foot that need not turn out.

How it works

  • Set by: the classification panel in the water test.
  • Letters: H, Y, E, A, T and B for start and support.
  • Numbers 1 to 7: one-hand starts and touches, intent to touch.
  • Numbers 8 and 9: breaststroke feet need not turn out.
  • 12: intent to kick or trail the legs.
  • Plus sign: the swimmer can butterfly kick.
  • Freestyle: no codes needed.
  • Support staff: allowed on deck only where coded.

The glossary has the codes of exception, the start and support codes, the touch and start codes 1 to 7, the leg codes 8, 9, 12 and plus, the technical assessment (water test) and the support staff (para swimming).

Tricky cases

A swimmer touches with one hand in breaststroke without code 2. Result?

Disqualification.

Can a code be used in any stroke?

No. Each stroke allows only certain codes.

Can a coach help on deck without a code?

Not unless the master list records the need.

Does freestyle need any codes?

No. Any style is allowed.

Why the rule exists

Stroke rules assume two working arms and legs. Codes let judges apply the rules fairly to each swimmer's body.
