What is a false start in para snowboard?

A · Advanced · Racing · 2 of 2
Checked 15 October 2026

Riders may push or pull from the start posts, but UL riders may not use prostheses or hooks to do so. Crossing the line before the signal, or forcing the gates, is a disqualification; timed starts allow 5 seconds either way. A rider who misses a gate must leave the course. A hindered rider may ask for a re-run.

How it works

  • Push-off posts: allowed.
  • UL riders: no aids to push.
  • No outside help: starter may not touch.
  • Heat start: random 1 to 4 seconds.
  • False start: disqualification.
  • Timed window: 5 seconds either way.
  • Missed gate: leave the course.
  • Re-run: if hindered, counts even if slower.

The glossary has the start procedure, the start commands, the false start, the start gate malfunction, the gate fault and the course testing.

Tricky cases

The gate jams without the rider touching it. Result?

The start is repeated.

A rider hindered by a fallen rider. Can they re-run?

Yes, if they ask and leave the course.

Can a coach call advice at the start?

Not during the final command.

Does a slower re-run count?

Yes.

Why the rule exists

A random delay stops riders anticipating the gate. A re-run puts right what was not the rider's fault.
