How a para judo contest works
- Para judo is judo for blind and visually impaired athletes. It follows judo's rules, and its scores, except where the para judo rules differ.
- The main difference is the start: both athletes take a set grip, one sleeve and the opposite lapel, before the referee calls "hajime" to begin.
- Athletes must fight with both hands at all times. If one loses the grip, the referee stops the fight and they grip up again.
- J1 athletes are blind and wear a red circle on the back; J2 athletes are visually impaired. The referee announces each score with the colour of the athlete, white or blue.
