How para athletics works
- Para athletics is running, jumping, throwing and wheelchair racing for athletes with an eligible impairment. Athletes compete in sport classes of similar impairment, so results compare like with like.
- The class is a letter and a number: T for track and jumps, F for throws, and the number for the kind of impairment, such as 11 to 13 for vision.
- The most vision-impaired runners (T11) race with a guide-runner, joined by a tether. Wheelchair racers use a three-wheeled racing chair; some throwers throw seated from a fixed frame.
- Otherwise a race or a throw works as in athletics: the first across the line, or the longest throw or jump, wins. A false start disqualifies.
