How long is a Muay Thai round?
B · Beginner · The contest · 2 of 5Every contest has three rounds; for Elite and U24 athletes each lasts 3 minutes with a 1-minute rest, and youth rounds are shorter. Before the first round each athlete, wearing the Mongkon, performs the Wai Kru to traditional music, bowing to the canvas three times. In preliminary contests it may last up to 2 minutes.
How it works
- Rounds: three in every division.
- Elite and U24: 3 minutes, with a 1-minute rest.
- U18 and U16: 2-minute rounds; younger groups shorter.
- Stoppages: time for warnings or kit is not counted.
- No extra rounds: a winner is found from the three.
- Wai Kru: at least the starting postures and three bows, wearing the Mongkon.
- Duration: up to 2 minutes in preliminary contests.
- Head guard: put on only after the Wai Kru and handshake.

Tricky cases
Can an athlete perform a ritual from another martial art?
No. Only Muay Thai's own ritual is allowed.
Can athletes shake hands between rounds?
No. Only before the first round and after the result.
What is "sealing the ring"?
Krob Kru, allowed only in finals.
Is the Wai Kru needed if there is no live band?
Yes. Recorded Muay Thai music may be used.
Why the rule exists
The Wai Kru honours teachers and keeps the sport's culture in every bout. Short rounds suit the intensity of full-contact striking.
