What is a virtual safety car in F1?
I · Intermediate · Racing · 2 of 6When people are in danger but the race need not stop, the Race Director sends out the safety car. Cars queue behind it within ten lengths and may not overtake, except lapped cars told to pass. A virtual safety car slows the race without a car on track: drivers keep above a minimum time in each sector. Neither lets cars pass.
How it works
- When: danger, no suspension.
- Called by: Race Director.
- Gap: ten car lengths.
- Overtaking: not allowed.

- VSC overtaking: not allowed.
- Overtake mode: disabled.
The glossary has the safety car, the virtual safety car (VSC), the lapped cars, the Race Director, the yellow flag and the Overtake.
