How long is an MMA fight?
B · Beginner · The fight · 2 of 6A professional round lasts five minutes, with one minute of rest between rounds. A bout may be scheduled for one to five rounds and can never exceed five rounds or 25 minutes. In practice most fights are three rounds, and title fights and main events are five. No fighter may fight more than five rounds in 24 hours.
How it works
- Round: five minutes, for professionals.
- Rest: one minute between rounds.
- Number of rounds: one, two, three, four or five.
- Upper limit: five rounds or 25 minutes.
- In 24 hours: no fighter may compete for more than five rounds or 25 minutes.
- End of a round: the bell and the referee's call of time. Any attack started after that is a foul.
- Between rounds: petroleum jelly may be reapplied to the face, only by an approved cutman or licensed cornerman.
- Stopped for outside reasons: the fight may go to the scorecards if two rounds of a three-round bout, or three of a five-round bout, are complete.
The glossary has the round, the bout, the corner, the decision, the referee and the judges.
Tricky cases
Are all UFC fights five rounds?
No. The rules allow one to five rounds. By the promotions' own practice, title fights and main events are five and other bouts are three. That practice is not in the unified rules.
A punch lands a moment after the bell. Is that a foul?
Yes. Once the referee has called time, any offensive action started by a fighter is after the bell and illegal.
A power cut stops a three-round fight in the third round. Is there a result?
Yes. A fight ended by an unforeseen, non-combat issue may go to the scorecards if two rounds of a three-round bout are complete.
Do amateurs fight five-minute rounds?
Not necessarily. The five-minute round is given for professionals. Amateur round lengths are set elsewhere and are not saved here.
Why the rule exists
Five minutes is long enough for a ground exchange to develop and short enough that fighters can be checked and recover. The 24-hour limit ends the old tournament format, in which a fighter could fight several times in one night while already hurt.
