How a match works, in a minute
How a kho-kho match works
- One team chases and the other defends. The chasers sit in a line down the middle of the court, facing alternate sides; one of them is on their feet as the attacker.
- The attacker tries to touch the defenders running round the court. A defender touched by hand is out, and the chasing side scores a point.
- The attacker cannot cross the central lane. To pass the chase on, they touch a seated teammate from behind and say "kho": that teammate becomes the attacker.
- A match is two innings. In each, both teams take one turn chasing and one turn defending.
- The team with more points at the end wins.
How long
In the National Club Games rule book a turn lasts five minutes, with two minutes between turns and five between innings: four turns of chasing in all.
