What happens when jiu-jitsu athletes roll off the mat?

I · Intermediate · The match · 1 of 3
Checked 14 October 2026

A match starts standing on the referee's call of "Fight!". Once the two have a grip on each other, either may go to the ground. If they drift into the safety area in a stable position, the referee stops them and resets the same position in the centre. If they leave the mats altogether, they restart standing.

How it works

  • Start: standing, about two metres apart, after bows to the referee and to each other.
  • "Fight!": starts and resumes the match.
  • "Stop!": pauses or ends it.
  • Going down: allowed once there is a grip or hold.
  • Two-thirds in the safety area, stable: the referee stops the match and resets the same position in the centre.
  • Scoring near the edge: the referee waits for the three seconds before stopping.
  • Beyond the safety area: the match restarts standing, unless a stable position can be recreated.
  • Standing in the safety area: restart standing in the centre.
  • Never in a submission: a match is never restarted with a submission on.
  • Fleeing: leaving the area on purpose to stop a score is a penalty, and the opponent gets two points.

The glossary has the match area, the fleeing the mat, the referee gestures, the three-second stabilization, the top position and the continuity.

Tricky cases

An athlete is about to be passed and deliberately crawls off the mat. What happens?

A penalty for fleeing, and two points to the opponent. If there was a stable position, it may be reset in the centre.

A submission is on as the athletes reach the safety area. Does the referee stop it?

No. When a submission attempt is in place over the safety area, the referee should not interrupt.

The defender's real escape from a submission takes both athletes off the mats. What then?

The time is stopped and the athlete who attempted the submission gets two points. The match restarts standing.

Can a match be restarted in the middle of an arm lock?

No. A match must never be restarted in a submission.

Why the rule exists

Resetting a stable position in the centre means an athlete who worked for a position does not lose it to the edge of the mat. Restarting standing when the position cannot be recreated is the fair fallback. The fleeing rule stops the edge from being used as an escape.
