How a match works, in a minute
How a ju-jitsu fight works
- A match has three parts. Part 1 is fought at a distance with punches, strikes and kicks, all with light contact.
- Part 2 begins when either fighter takes a grip. Strikes are then forbidden, and fighters score with throws and takedowns.
- Part 3 begins when the fight goes to the ground. Fighters score with pins and submission holds.
- A fighter who scores a full point, an ippon, in all three parts wins at once. Otherwise the higher score when time is up wins.
How long
Three minutes for adults.
