Penalties
- What is a game misconduct in ice hockey?A major penalty is five minutes for a foul that recklessly endangers an opponent, and it does not end when the other team scores.
- What happens when both teams get penalties at the same time? When both teams get equal penalties at one stoppage, substitutes come on at once, so neither side is short.
- When is a penalty shot given in ice hockey?A penalty shot is given when a player with the puck and only the goalkeeper to beat, in the neutral or attacking zone, is fouled from behind and loses a reasonable chance to score.
Fouls
- What is a legal body check in ice hockey?A legal body check uses the hip or shoulder on an opponent who has the puck, from the front or side, above the knees and not above the shoulders.
- What is high-sticking in ice hockey?A stick that hits an opponent above the shoulders is high-sticking: a minor, or a double-minor if it injures.
- What is interference in ice hockey?A player may not hold, trip or obstruct an opponent who does not have the puck.
- When is a goal disallowed for goalie interference?A goal is disallowed if an attacker, by position or contact, stops the goalkeeper moving freely in the crease or defending the goal, or deliberately contacts the goalkeeper anywhere.
Officials, injuries and categories
- What do the referees and linespersons do in ice hockey?Referees run the game: they call penalties, rule on goals and have the final word on the ice.
- How does video review work in ice hockey?Where video review is used, a review consultant checks every goal: whether the puck crossed the line, was kicked, hit a high stick or went in after time ran out.
