What happens when play is suspended in golf?
A · Advanced · Players, equipment and conduct · 7 of 9A player may not stop play unless the Committee suspends it, the players in a match agree to stop or the player reasonably believes there is danger from lightning. On an immediate suspension nobody may play another stroke. On a normal one, players may finish a hole they have started.
How it works
- Immediate suspension, used for danger: no stroke may be made until play resumes. Playing on means disqualification.
- Normal suspension, for darkness or an unplayable course: a group between holes must stop. A group that has started a hole may stop at once or play out the hole.
- Lightning: a player who reasonably believes there is danger may stop without waiting for the Committee, and must report to it as soon as possible.
- A match: the players may agree to stop for any reason, unless that delays the competition.
- Stopping for any other reason means disqualification.
The ball:
- When play stops, the player may mark and lift the ball.
- When play resumes, the ball, or another ball, is replaced on the spot. Play restarts from where it stopped, even on a later day.
- If the ball or the marker was moved during the stoppage, by anything, it is put back.
- Players must be in position and resume at the time the Committee sets.
Tricky cases
Can a group finish the hole after play has been suspended for lightning?
No. On an immediate suspension no further stroke may be made.
Can a player stop because it is raining hard?
No. Rain is not one of the three reasons. It is for the Committee to suspend play.
Can the ball be changed or cleaned when play resumes?
Yes. The original ball or another ball may be replaced on the spot, and a ball lifted for the stoppage may be cleaned.
Why the rule exists
Everyone in a competition should play in conditions decided by the Committee, not by each player's own view of the weather. Lightning is the one case where safety cannot wait for an announcement.
