How a match works, in a minute
How a golf tournament works
- Each hole starts from the teeing area and ends when the ball is holed. In between, the ball is played as it lies.
- Each hole has a par, the standard number of strokes, usually 3, 4 or 5. One under par is a birdie, two under an eagle, one over a bogey.
- In stroke play a player's score is every stroke taken over all the rounds, including penalty strokes. The lowest total wins.
- In match play each hole is a separate contest won by the lower score, and the match goes to whoever leads by more holes than are left to play.
