How a match works, in a minute
How a goalball game works
- Goalball is a game for blind and visually impaired athletes. Two teams of three, all wearing eyeshades, take turns throwing a ball with bells inside along the floor.
- Each team aims to get the ball across the other team's goal line, which runs the full 9 m width of the court. The defenders listen for the ball and block it with their bodies.
- A team must get the ball back past the centre line within 10 seconds of first touching it.
- A goal is scored when the ball fully crosses the goal line. The team with more goals wins; a ten-goal lead ends the game.
How long
24 minutes, in two halves of 12 minutes. A tie that needs a winner goes to 6 minutes of golden-goal overtime, then extra throws.
