What is flag guarding in flag football?

Flag guarding is anything a runner does to keep a defender's hand from the flag: covering it with a hand, an arm or the ball, waving a hand in front of it or holding an arm out. Jumping and diving count too. Spinning and dipping the hips are allowed. The penalty is 5 yards from the spot and loss of down.

How it works

  • The flag pull: "the removal of one or more flags from an opponent". The defender may go for the flags of the runner.
  • Flag guarding: covering the flag "with any part of the body (hand, arm or leg) or with the ball".
  • Also guarding: stretching a hand towards the defender, with or without the ball.
  • Jumping: pushing off the ground so that the flags rise well above their running height. Illegal.
  • Diving: leaning the upper body forward to make the flags harder to reach. Illegal.
  • Spinning: legal, if the flags are not raised.
  • Dipping: bending the knees to lower the flags. Legal.
  • Penalty: 5 yards from the spot of the foul and loss of down.
  • A real attempt: there must be a serious attempt at a pull for guarding to be called.
  • Only the runner: pulling the flag of a player without the ball is an illegal flag pull, 5 yards.
  • Fakes: a player pretending to have the ball may be deflagged.
  • Give it back: the defender must hand the flag back or leave it where it was pulled.

The glossary has the flag pull, flag guarding, the flag belt, the tackle, the loss of down and the penalty.

Tricky cases

A runner holds the ball out in front to reach the middle line as a defender comes from the front. Foul?

Yes, flag guarding. The outstretched ball is in the way of the defender coming for the flag.

The same reach, but the defender is chasing from behind. Foul?

No. The ball held out in front does not obstruct a pull from behind.

A defender slips and falls in the runner's path, and the runner hurdles them. Legal?

No. It is jumping. The runner must go round a player on the ground.

A runner jumps sideways out of a defender's reach without rising higher than normal. Foul?

No. A jump in any direction that does not raise the level of the flags is legal.

Why the rule exists

A defender is not allowed to grab the runner, so the flag must stay within reach. Each banned move either hides the flag or puts a head, an arm or the ball where the defender's hand is going. The Code puts it as a trade: the runner keeps the flags an easy target, and the puller keeps contact to a minimum.
