How are jumps and spins scored in figure skating?
B · Beginner · Competition and scoring · 2 of 4Each element has a base value set in the ISU Scale of Values. The technical panel names the element and its level. Each judge then gives a grade of execution from -5 to +5; the highest and lowest are dropped and the rest averaged. Base value plus GOE gives the element's score, and the elements are added.
How it works
- Base value: from the Scale of Values, rising with difficulty.
- Naming: the technical panel identifies each element and, where needed, its level.
- Levels: Basic, then 1 to 4 by the number of features achieved.
- GOE: each judge grades from -5 to +5.
- Trimmed mean: highest and lowest dropped, the rest averaged; not with fewer than five judges.
- Element score: base value plus the panel's GOE.
- Combinations: jump base values are added; the GOE uses the hardest jump.
- Second half: in singles, jumps started then earn 1.1 times base value: the last one in the short program, the last three in free skating.
The glossary has the technical elements score, the base value, the grade of execution, the trimmed mean, the level of difficulty and the second-half factor.
Tricky cases
Does the second-half factor raise the GOE too?
No. Only the base value is multiplied by 1.1.
When does the second half start?
At the middle of the required time, ignoring the 10-second allowance.
An extra element is added. Does it score?
No. Elements beyond the allowed number are not counted; only the first attempts are.
Is the bonus available in pairs?
No. The rule applies to single skating.
Why the rule exists
Separating what was done from how well it was done rewards both difficulty and quality. Dropping the extreme grades limits the effect of one generous or harsh judge.
Where it differs

| Singles free skating | 1.1 on the last three jumps in the second half | ISU 353 (1)(h) |
