What happens when the ball goes out over the side-line?

I · Intermediate · How does play restart? · 10 of 21
Checked 13 October 2026

The team that did not touch it last restarts play where the ball crossed the line, using the free hit procedure. There is no throw-in in hockey. The whole ball must have crossed the line before it is out.

How it works

  • The ball is out when it passes completely over the side-line. The line is part of the field.
  • The team that was not last to touch it takes the restart.
  • The restart is on the line where the ball crossed, with free hit rules: ball still, opponents 5 metres away.
  • The ball can be pushed, hit, flicked or scooped, not raised intentionally with a hit.

Tricky cases

Is the ball out if it is on the line?

No. It is out only when the whole ball has crossed.

Can the taker play it to themselves?

Yes, as a self-pass, as at any free hit.

Why the rule exists

Restarting with the stick keeps the game moving and needs no special set-up.
