How a match works, in a minute
How an esports competition works
- Esports is organised competition in video games. There is no single rule book: each game's competition has its own, written with the game's publisher.
- In head-to-head games such as VALORANT, two teams of five meet in a match that is a series of games, or maps: best of three is won by the first to two, best of five by the first to three.
- Before the match the teams take turns to ban and pick the maps they will play.
- In battle royale games such as PUBG, 16 teams of four play on one map at once and score a point per kill plus points for where they place. Totals over many matches set the standings.
