How big must a cricket ground be?

Officials' detail · What are the pitch, the ball and the bat? · 5 of 5

In ICC internationals, no boundary may be more than 90 yards (82.29 m) or, at grounds not already approved, less than 65 yards (59.43 m) from the centre of the pitch. The umpires fix the boundary before the toss. It is marked by a rope, and the edge nearest the pitch is the boundary line.

How it works

  • The aim is the biggest playing area the venue allows.
  • There must be 3 yards (2.74 m) between the rope and the first solid object, for players' safety.
  • If the rope is less than 90 yards out, it cannot be more than 10 yards from the fence.
  • Grounds already approved for internationals that cannot meet the minimum are exempt, but must still maximise the size.
  • If the rope is knocked out of place, the boundary stays where it was, and the rope is put back when the ball is dead.
  • Under the Laws, the umpires and captains agree the boundary before the toss, with no set size.

Tricky cases

If the rope is pushed back during play, where is the boundary?

Where the rope was originally. A moved rope does not move the boundary.

Why are some grounds smaller than 65 yards?

Grounds already approved for international cricket that cannot meet the minimum are exempt.

Is the boundary the rope or the line?

The edge of the rope nearest the pitch.

Why the rule exists

Short boundaries make sixes too easy. Minimum sizes keep the balance between bat and ball, and the run-off keeps fielders safe.
