Can a captain end their side's innings early?
I · Intermediate · How does a match work, and how is it won? · 17 of 19Checked 13 October 2026
Yes,
How it works
- A declared or forfeited innings counts as completed.
- The captain tells the other captain and the umpires; the decision cannot then be changed.
- A side usually declares to leave enough time to bowl the other side out.
Tricky cases
Can a side declare in the last innings of a Test?
No. Under the current Laws and the ICC playing conditions, the final innings cannot be declared or forfeited.
Can a captain declare in an ODI or a T20?
No. Limited-overs innings run to their overs or until ten batters are out.
Can a captain declare at the end of an over in the middle of an innings?
Yes, at any time the ball is dead.
Why the rule exists
In a timed match, a side that has enough runs needs time to take wickets. Declaring trades runs for time.
Where it differs
The same in the Laws and the ICC men's Test playing conditions. Not applicable to ODIs and T20 internationals.
