How is boccia scored?

B · Beginner · Playing an end · 5 of 5
Checked 14 October 2026

When all balls are played, the side with the closest ball scores a point for each ball nearer than the opponent's closest. Equidistant nearest balls score a point each. Points add up over the ends. A tied match goes to an extra end, started by coin toss, whose points do not count in the score.

How it works

  • After all balls: score the end.
  • Closest side: one point per closer ball.
  • Equidistant: a point each.
  • Measuring: by the referee if needed.
  • Match: most points over the ends.
  • Tie: an extra end.
  • First ball: by coin toss.
  • Tie-break points: not added to the score.

The glossary has the scoring (boccia), the tie-break (boccia), the equidistant balls, the colour indicator, the overhead cameras and the disrupted end.

Tricky cases

Red has two balls closer than blue's best. Score?

Two points to red.

The tie-break is also level. Then?

Another, with the other side starting.

A referee knocks balls before scoring. What happens?

They are put back, or the end is replayed.

Is video used to place balls?

Overhead cameras at major events.

Why the rule exists

Counting balls closer than the opponent's best rewards control of the whole end, not one lucky shot.
