The field and the equipment
Measurements and equipment: what officials check, rarely what decides a match.
Officials' detail · 4 rules · Step 4 of 4The sled and officials
- What are the rules for a luge sled?A luge sled has two runners, two steels, a seat pod and two bridges, and all steering must come from these parts.
- Can luge athletes wear extra weight?Lighter athletes may wear extra weight on the body, never on the sled.
- Why do luge officials take the temperature of the steels?Warm steels glide faster, so each sled's steels are measured at the start and may be no more than 5°C above a control steel kept in the shade.
- What must a luge athlete wear?A race suit, an FIL-approved helmet and luge shoes are compulsory in training and racing.
