How a match works, in a minute

How a bobsleigh race works

  1. A crew pushes its sled along the start, jumps in and races down an iced track with steep banked curves. The pilot steers.
  2. Sleds go down one at a time, and times are taken to a hundredth of a second.
  3. A race is two or four heats. The lowest total time wins.
  4. There are 2-man and 4-man sleds for men, and 2-woman and the single-woman monobob for women. After a crash the whole crew must cross the finish line with the sled to be ranked.

How long

A crew has 60 seconds from the starter's signal to begin its push. In later heats the leading group goes in reverse order of the standings, so the leader goes last of them.
