Fouls and free throws
Technical, disruptive, flagrant and disqualifying fouls
- What is a disruptive foul in basketball?A disruptive foul is unnecessary contact that breaks up the game: fouling to stop a fast break without trying to play the ball, fouling from behind a player with a clear run to the basket, or fouling to stop the clock at the end of a quarter.
- What is a flagrant foul in basketball?A flagrant foul is contact that goes beyond a normal foul: not a real basketball play, reckless or dangerous, or excessively hard.
- What gets a player thrown out of a basketball game?A disqualifying foul is any flagrant unsporting act, such as violence against an opponent or a referee.
Players, officials and the court
- What happens when a basketball player is injured?Referees may stop the game for an injury, but if a team is attacking they normally wait until its move ends.
- What can a basketball coach do during a game? The head coach picks the starting five, requests time-outs and chooses who shoots technical free throws.
- Who are the officials in a basketball game?A game has two or three referees on the court: a crew chief and one or two umpires.
