How long is a softball game and how is it won?

A softball game is seven innings. In each inning both teams bat until three of their players are out, and the team with more runs at the end wins. The home team bats second and does not bat in the last inning if it is already ahead. A team far enough in front after three, four or five innings wins early.

How it works

  • Seven innings: "A regulation game consists of seven completed innings."
  • Home and visiting: the visiting team bats in the top half of each inning and the home team in the bottom half.
  • Three outs: each team bats until three outs are made.
  • Not always seven: the home team does not bat in the bottom of the seventh if it leads, and the game ends the moment it goes ahead there.
  • Run ahead rule: a lead of 15 runs after three innings, 10 after four or 7 after five ends the game.
  • Equal turns: if the visiting team reaches the margin in the top half, the home team still bats in the bottom half.
  • Called games: a game stopped for weather or darkness counts if five innings are complete, or if the home team leads after batting in fewer.
  • Tied and stopped: a tied game that cannot continue is replayed from the start.
  • Level after seven: the game goes to extra innings under the tiebreaker.
  • Forfeit: recorded as 7-0 to the team not at fault.
  • Who is home: by coin toss, agreement or the competition's own rule.

The glossary has the inning, the regulation game, the run difference rule, the tie game, the forfeit and the run.

Tricky cases

The home team leads 3-2 after the top of the seventh. Does it bat?

No. A full seven innings need not be played if the home team has scored more runs in six innings.

A team leads 9-0 after four innings. Is the game over?

No. After four innings the lead must be ten. After five innings a lead of seven is enough.

The visiting team goes 15 ahead in the top of the third. Does the home team bat?

Yes. Complete innings are played unless the home team is the one that reaches the margin.

Rain stops a game at 2-2 after five innings. What is the result?

A regulation tied game. Under the rule book it is replayed from the start, and the line-ups may be changed.

Why the rule exists

Softball has no clock, so a fixed number of turns at bat is what makes the contest fair: each team has the same 21 outs to spend. The run ahead rule protects a tournament schedule, and a beaten team's pitchers, from innings that can no longer change the result.
