How a match works, in a minute
How a baseball game works
- A game is nine innings. In each inning both teams bat once, and a team bats until three of its players are out.
- The pitcher throws to the batter. A pitch is a strike if the batter swings and misses or it passes through the strike zone, and a ball if not. Three strikes and the batter is out; four balls and the batter walks to first base.
- A batter hits the ball into play and runs. A ball caught before it lands is an out, and so is a fielded ball thrown to first base before the batter gets there.
- A run is scored when a runner gets round first, second, third and home. The team with more runs after nine innings wins.
How long
A tied game goes to extra innings, and a team ten or more runs behind after five innings has lost.
