The throw

  1. When may a javelin thrower step off the runway?The thrower must stay on the runway until the javelin has touched the ground.
  2. From where to where is a throw measured?A valid throw is measured from where the head of the javelin first landed, back to the inside edge of the arc.

The competition

  1. Two athletes throw the same distance. Who is placed higher?If two athletes have the same best distance, their second-best throws are compared, then their third-best, then the next.
  2. How does an athlete reach the final?When there are too many athletes for one competition, a qualification round is held first.
  3. How long does an athlete have to take their throw?An athlete has one minute to start a trial once the official signals that all is ready.
