The events and the points

  1. What happens if two athletes finish on the same points?Athletes who finish with the same total of points share the place.
  2. What happens if an athlete skips an event?An athlete must at least attempt every event.

How the events differ

  1. Is a decathlete disqualified for one false start?No.
  2. How many attempts does a decathlete get in the long jump and the throws?Three.
  3. How do the high jump and pole vault work inside a decathlon or heptathlon?The bar goes up by the same step all the way through: 3 cm in the high jump and 10 cm in the pole vault.
  4. Who runs against whom in a combined event?In every event but the last, athletes are put into heats or groups with others of similar ability in that event.
  5. What happens to a decathlete who is disqualified in one event?It depends on why.
